Oooh, get this fact-fans! A TV picture is run at 24 frames/sec whereas
films are recorded at 25 fps (I think, they might be the other way around)
so when they show a film on the telly they have to chop a few frames out
here and there so what was a 180 minute film in the cinema ends up as a
179 minute film on TV (or something).

Well, assuming you chose pens carefully, and locked them with Fullpalette=

   GLQuake uses hardware 3d accelleration. On a PC it displays at ~60fps =
as opposed to ~30fps normal quake.

   I can't try it (no 3d gfx card) but from what I've heard on the poweru=
p list, amiga glquake runs fine on some peoples amigas, but crashes other=
 peoples...

   Ah yes, you won't be able to play mp3's full quality on your 040 (i kn=
ow, I have one, but I have a ppc in there as well ;)

   Basically, look through the rexx file, find (I presume it uses mpega) =
the mpega command line and use the -d 4 option. =


Although, how fast is your modem and what bitrate is the mp3 stream?

cd-quality mp3 is around 128-144kbps. Keep in mind that a 56k modem will =
only handel a max of 56kbps stream (although you'd be lucky if you got 20=
k over the internet :)

Not strictly true, I have used a PC formatted Zip disk with a Zip Plus
drive with nothing more than a Workbench CrossDos mountlist (I was very
impressed, and certainly impressed the person I borrowed the drive
from).  I know internal hard drives are slightly different tho.

Thanks for that. I was looking at network cards earlier but held of on
buying one until I knew what the plot was. I have a 2B motherboard, so I
might be okay too. I'll have a look at Maplins website for those clips just
in case, my soldering sucks.

Well, actually, I forgot to do the KF jobby, but in response to your
comments:

1) This conference is a "direct" connection to the USA, *not* over the
internet.

2) This needs a two way 384Kbps connection (six times 64Kbs ISDN lines),
cablemodem (and this is according to the NTL web-site), while it can
download at 512Kbps, can only manage 128Kbps upload speed.

3) I need specialist equipment to take part in this conference, which I
cannot and will not buy.

4) Anywhere I go to rent conference facilities from, that will have this
equipment will (or should) already have ISDN.

5) Why would I want to change phone companies, buy a cable modem and a
network card, for something that's useless to me (see below)

6) I am *not* able to connect to NTL here (yet - even though they have
bought Cable & Wireless, alledgedly)) as Telewest run the cable services
in this area, don't contradict me on this because I've already tried
several Bristol postcodes, including my own, on NTL's web site.

Need I say any more?

On the PC, quite a bit...

GLQuake (on the PC) has a lot better `quality' look, with finer pixels,
etc. and basically, makes use of 3D chips, IIRC.

I loved Hired Guns too.....I think one of my fave Amiga games ever has to be
BattleTech though.... fantastic game, i left my A500 on for a week solid

Heh.... that's the one thing i wanted to do, and as far as i can tell, it's
not possible. There are games i wanted to play and they require extra memory
than the standard 2mb, but they don't like the 040, so if you could disable
the 040 and keep the memory, it would have solved all my problems.....

I am using a 56K modem and an ioblix1200s.  At the moment I am only
using a
connection speed of 115200  (230400 a bit unsteady).  I am testing with
a
MP3 stream from the http://www.iocon.com/mp3/mp3.index (as in the read
me
file) and the stream should be a 48K mono, or something like that.

What exactly do I change?  If I use 'ed' and then save any changes then
StreamMP3 doesn't work.  I get an error saying something about quotes??

Do you mean the line that goes something like this.
mp3args = '-m -t2000 -f22050 -I0002000'

This is the first time I have tried anthing like this so I apologise if
I sound a bit think.

Probably the A600, it was going to be labelled less than 500 to
indicate it was a small console-y type thing. But they thought that
making it the A300 would give people the impression that it was a cost
cutting, low end, piece of crap.

Yeah that's something I'm planning on doing.  However, I've yet to set up a
net connection on it yet - that's planned for later.

I'm also considering networking it to my miggy, if anyone has any pointers ...

We put all of the first 99 covers on the CD in AF100 (and then more, but I
can't remember on which CD). </me uses AFCDFind> AFCD38, in the Reader
Requests drawer for the first 99.

I don't see how they could promise we'd do one, we certainly never agreed to
it. However, in this issue, we've got a complete beginners guide to 3D
basics, written by moi (and the bloody hardest bit of writing I've ever
done. Trying not to do more than four pages on 3D is like trying to drain
the Pacific ocean with a sieve) and a new tutorial on Imagine written by
afb member Andy Kinsella. The first one doesn't look too nice because it
has far too much copy for the two pages it's on, but it's certainly
fact-packed.

It's true but the other way around. Films are shown at 24fps, PAL TV is at
25fps and NTSC TV is 30fps. However, you can double those rates for TV
since those frames are actually made of two interlacing fields at 50Hz and
60Hz (times per second - a frequency Mash) respectively. I'm sure we'll get
a mail from Tim Siefert in about a week's time explaining all this very
succinctly.

Morning All,

I have recently become a convert to Fusion and am using my old Shapeshifter
hardfiles with no problems.

I simply moved my Shapeshifter hardfiles into the Fusion/Hardfiles dierctory
and then renamed them "MSHardFile0", MSHardFile1", MSHardFile2", etc. I then
set the paths within Shapeshifter to their new location and now I can use
Fusion and Shapeshifter with the same Hardfiles.

In my oppinion, Fusion is the better product; on my system it is faster and
more stable.

It is true that many such patches aren't explained to well; they
usually have the "it does this" text in the docs, but explainations on
how you config the things are quite succinct.

VisualPrefs would be a great start, cos a). I have it installed, and
b). I want to know exactly what each options in the prefs does. Maybe
then we can increase the number of reader submissions on VisualPrefs
configs! ;)

Oh, and ReqAttack. That ones a right b*****d to setup right! How about
it, Ben?

That's what it does. The fact that it cannot populate the packets with
enough data is not a problem - it will run at 100mbps.

You still need a Zorro II setup though - get a Z4 for your A1200.

Yeah - I tried it last night! Given that the pattern I'm using is 256 col=

I've just taken mine apart, and saw nothing on the motherboard that
implied
an A number.  So I spent ages getting it back together (that data cable
to
the CD mechanism is a complete ars^H^H^Hpain to get back in properly :)
and
it was only whenI was putting the last of the screws into the case that
I
saw it there, on the bottom of the machine, on a sticker, THE A
NUMBER!!
Typical huh?

Anyway a CD=B3=B2=A0is an A100 ... I knew it was something like A300 anyway!

They wouldn't know of course, unless they looked. Then again, getting the
SNMP information from a router asking how much data was requested *from*
port 80 is dead easy to find out an monitor, using something like MRTG and
the like.

Most providers filter out ports 80/8000/8080 to prevent HTTP and also
21/2121/69/6969 to prevent FTP (and TFTP). And the ports for IRCBOTs.

This is dead easy to do - takes about 10 seconds on a Cisco router that all
the connections go through.

Or it could be done via Squidproxy which can be run in transparent mode so
you don't even know it's there.

Then again, it all depends on the AUP that you sign up to. If they exclude
it and you do it, they can withdraw the service altogether.

Mmm, brushed aluminium... Is this VisualPrefs/Birdie/QNX thingy in the
same colours as Neutrino, and are the gadgets good? I haven't tried
making my own gadgets yet, so I don't know anything about it. Does
VisualPrefs scale them if the font size is different? And what about
screens with different palettes?

Hello all.

I have an A1200 with a Blizzard 060 with SCSI board. It takes forever
to boot up.

I gather this is because it checks all for the presence of various SCSI
devices.
This is irritating as I only have a CDROM connected.

What makes it worse is that I have OS3.5, which causes a reboot as part
of setpatch AND
Fusion's rsrvmem thing, which also reboots the machine.

I guess that means my system checks three times for SCSI devices.

Is there any way of telling it not to bother for anything other than
the CDROM?

I know Ben has dismissed the idea of more OS3.5 things for a while,
but....

I'd like something a bit more detailed on the new preferences editors.
There's
not much in the manual (that I've found anyway).

I'm especially interested in the CD prefs. There's a gadget in there
for boot
priority, which is permanently greyed out on my machine.  Booting from
a CD was
one of the features touted in the early days of 3.5 discussions.

How does this work, if at all?

And is the second 3.5 update due soon?

I know what you mean! My Amiga reboots *three times* before I can do
anything; SetPatch (OS3,5), Oxypatcher, and the PPC.library emulation
all have to reboot. Wouldn't it be nice if they could all load
themselves in, then reboot only once?

Check Aminet. I know theres something there for the standard IDE port,
but I don't know of anything SCSI-related. Good luck on your quest!

You have a contract. That stipulates the service you receive and the
uses it may be put to. An "anything goes" policy would also permit spam.

How would you like it if your access slowed right down because someone
else on your segment of the network was running a server for MP3s?

Which QNX GUI? If your desktop is the one on Aminet now, then that's
just a
mockup shot created in Photoshop. If you look at the latest Amigactive,
you'll
see what Photon looks like now: a bit bluier, more Mac-ish with it's
gadgets,
but the same with it's images (lovely colourdepth, with big black
borders)

Anyone want me to make a VP theme for the *new* Photon?

Sorry to cut out the *entire* message (was getting a bit long),
but have you thought about trying to find System 7.5 on a CD,
or System 8 on a CD? It's easy to boot from them and install
your stuff.

On a lighter note, has anyone tried Fusion off the AFCD and
found that they can't use the CD emulation (Peripherals/CD-ROM)
with OS3.5 anymore? I could with the old Public Beta v43
scsi.device, but not with the newer OS3.5 one. What is Fusion
doing that makes it say that..

"scsi.device is not suitable for CDROM emulation"

.. or whatever it really says? Shapeshifter works fine, BTW,
but I bought Fusion way back when and I'd like to get it back
up and running..

Fusion doesn't seem to like any other program using a CGX screen
at the same time (including WB).  Try temporarily changing the
WB-Screen to a different driver (e.g. productivity) and launch
Fusion using a CGX mode.  ( I only have CGX3, so I don't know if
it will work with CGX4).

to start reading,

etc).But wait a minute there up in the right hand corner is a new add on

Hi All,
      Well the Ce-Bit started today and as usual all roads and telephone
lines around Hannover were Gridlocked by 09:00Hrs this morning.Anyway
Windows 2000 was what all the radio presenters were talking about from the
show(can't understand why!)and the fact that it needs about 400MB harddisk
space to install it?.
What are Microsoft on Magic Mushrooms or what!"400MB" i know its for
business,use but that really takes the p*ss.Can no one at Microsoft write
software that is compact and well written,I take it they must have shares
in the Harddrive industry!.

It's been a while and like the prodical son I return. University
demanded I used PC's, cross platform working became a pain in the rear
end so I forked out a few hundred quid and bought a peecee. Now the
thing is I dig out my miggy a trusty little 030/50 with 8mb of ram and
kickstart 3.0 stil, 500mb HD and found a multitude of programs that
don't work on it, requiring PPC processors and larger amounts of ram
some also needing kickstart 3.1 and optimised for wb3.5, and more HD
space (when did that happen?). flicking through a mag I found the
number of add ons has increased but the problem is I am not the richest
person in the land and I really trusted my miggy and basically need a
faster one and something that can emulate a PC at a reasonable speed.
Is there any companies that could tailor make a miggy with PPC for a
decent price? or is there any up for grabs. Ideally a graphics card
would be nice. I hear Eyetech are good, but well it's been a year since
I last purchased for miggy and I'm a little out of touch...

Can anyone help?

PS great to seesuch a loyal base still active, I've had to put up with
lots of comments about my miggy and I'll continue to defend her to the
bitter end...

run on servers. I have however seen an installation of Windows 2000 on a
laptop (don't ask - the culprit is a just a complete fool) and the windows
directory was in excess of 800 MB in size!!!

what's the latest info, gettin information on the amiga is very hard,
none of my newsagents have any amiga mags. Latest I knew was that MCC
was scraped for a PPC and that it'sgoing LINUX. At the same time I've
read news about Gateway selling Amiga to loyal ex-employees - (amino I
think). Basically can anyone direct me to a good source of information
except Amiga Format which  I really ought to subscribe to.

    wait a second, I'm only trying to help,
the last time you mentioned the <network device> you didn't know whether it
was a hub or a switch, this implied that you might not know its
specification. This is why I was talking in general terms and saying you
should check your particular equipment. This will determine what type of
network card you need. You hub is 100 only, then you need a 100M card. But:

That's what it does. The fact that it cannot populate the packets with
enough data is not a problem - it will run at 100mbps.

Agreed, calling it a 100M card doesn't mean it is capable of moving data to
its PCMCIA or Zorro interface at 100Mbit/s, only that the LAN port can
interface with another 100Mbit/s LAN port.

If it turns out that you can only get a 10M card for the 1200, there are
other possibilities.

What is you comp?  A 1200? or a bigbox?

Most stuff doesnt require that much harddisk space. you can pick up New
2Gb HD for around 80 pounds.  Second hand they should be even cheaper.

Check out amibench at  http://www.amibench.org   where you can place a
wanted add or buy stuff for sale.

Dont we all :)  (well, no actually. I want a faster miggy, but not a pc
emulation one)

Get hold of AmigaFormat Or (dare I say it on afb?) AmigActice, both in
WHSmiths and such.  There are adverts in there for both sets of
hardware.

Sorry, I don't know about the scsi.device problem, I did take a quicl
look at the messages I have here from the fusion ML, but there's
nothing to do with this problem, IYSWIM... :(

I managed to get OS8.0 (new, in sealed box) from someone on
http://www.qxl.com for 20. Someone else here (hello Neil ;) managed to
pick it up at a computer fair for 5. The OS8.1 update can then be
downloaded from Apple.

I'm sure OS8.1 runs way nicer here than 7.5.x did...

An example of where this manifests itself more than anything, is if you
have a `menu' consisting of a set of image buttons, one above the other.
If you want these to butt up against each other at the top and bottom,
you will more than likely have to WIDTH & HEIGHT in the TD tags to make
sure the cells don't leave a gap between the images.
